The Long Return

Not to get sentimental or anything but what a year, right?

*It is in fact February 1st*

I mean… *gestures at entire calendar starting in January 2020 to now* You know what I mean.

Here’s a slight list of things that occurred in the last 12 months of my life (in no particular order):

  • Global pandemic (this is a free space on the bingo card)
  • What seemed like the entire continent of Australia burning down
  • WWIII almost breaking out (bet you forgot about this one)
  • 100+ days of riots in my home city
  • Historic wildfires on a statewide scale that culminated in an entire COUNTY adjacent to my own being placed under some level of evacuation orders
  • Election buffoonery at an astounding level. [Side note: I found out about the Supernatural drama on my twitter feed while scrolling for Nevada ballot updates. (If you know, you know). This truly is the dumbest timeline.]
  • Way too many awesome people dying (R.I.P. Alex Trebek, patron saint of weird fact-collector nerds)
  • FRICKING MURDER HORNETS
  • I know I’m missing stuff this is just soooooome

So many words to try and sum up how painful, exhausting, terrifying, annoying, astonishing, overwhelming, exhausting, panic-inducing, depressing, disgusting, shocking, moving, and exhausting this experience has been. And the craziest part (to me) is that nearly everyone had a year like that–is having a year like that.

In the middle of everything… yeah this site didn’t get updated at all. Apologies. But I WAS writing, despite the chaos. In fact, in the midst of all this nonsense, I did the thing I’ve always wanted to do: write a book I actually liked. AND finish it. AND revise it. AND (in a surprise to even me) write a second book I also liked.

I’m not sure why this was the year, out of all of them, for the pieces to align in my mind. I’m not sure if what I’ve done will ever be anything more that this: a finished work a few of my trusted friends got to read. Whatever the case, I’m thankful, despite everything.

May 2021 be a year of boring and unremarkable things.
