They will happen! On this very blog! (At some point.)
I do book reviews a bit differently on this site. For one thing, there’s no timeline. I’ll pick up a 60-year-old book as easily as a new release and want to write about it. (I read Stephen King’s Carrie for the first time last month. ‘Late to the party’ doesn’t begin to cover it but for what it’s worth, I thoroughly enjoyed it.)
The other thing is I try to only review books I enjoy. (Note: this does not apply to movies, get wrecked Rise of Skywalker.) This has changed dramatically since I started trying to write books of my own. One has only to glance at my Goodreads page of olde (a terrifying sight) to find a string of scathing reviews. At the time, I thought they were hilarious and oh-so smart. Now, I find most of them rather depressing.
It’s always easier to be critical than constructive and clever than thoughtful. Picking apart bad things is fun–until the bad thing is yours. Building stuff is a lot of work. Getting in internet flame wars over it, not so much. There is definitely a place for criticism, especially when it comes to tropes and topics that can cause active, real-world harm but nitpicking just for the sake of it? Eh. I’d rather push to something enjoyable in the vein of Mark Reads, where watching someone experience something you love (or hate) becomes an experience all its own.
So yeah. File this one under ‘more things to happen on blog question mark’. It’s a good time, I’m telling ya.
