I’ve read this story before.
Not this exact one of course, but the general idea of it. I’ve gone through perhaps a dozen books over the years with similar concepts, few of which I recall distinctly or even fondly. So, when I picked up enough clues to “figure out” what kind of book this was, I sighed a bit internally and tried to prepare myself for the rest.
I was wrong.
It is the kind of story I thought it was, but one made perfect by perspective. Don’t get me wrong, this piece is not without flaws. But I’m giving it five stars for the same reason I give all my other fives. There are some stories that stick long after the last page has been turned, that change your perspective for the better. Stories that don’t just have things to say but which speak. They may not say the same things to everyone, but if you know you know.
For me, this was that kind of book.
I cannot feel all of it. Cannot fully understand and appreciate all of it. This too, is purposeful. But even in these places, I am awed by the depth of heart it took to tell this story. It matters that it is fun, beautiful, powerful, that the cover is fantastic (serious props to the artist, Hillary D. Wilson) and YA (though the quick cuts to avoid f***s cracked me up more than once).
I enjoyed it immensely and anxiously await a sequel. If you’re interested, you can find it here.
5/5
