Mid-Month Mugshot: June

Mug lore: This particular piece is my most recent acquisition (as of this writing). It’s a World Market mug in the style I like (teacup shape, mug sturdiness, beautiful pattern) but not purchased at World Market prices. I found it in perfect condition at a thrift shop for six bucks and promptly brought it home.

What I’m drinking: Trader Joe’s Ginger Turmeric Herbal Tea with plenty of honey in an attempt to battle a sore throat I picked up a few weeks ago. All my illnesses seem to be lasting 10x longer than they should these days which has resulted in boom-or-bust writing habits. Thankfully, it appears I’m finally shaking off the worst symptoms.

What I just finished reading: The Brothers Karamazov is finally done! It’s taken me the better part of the year but was an absolutely worthwhile read. I wrote down more quotes than I have for any other book I’ve read. The text is written in such a way as to encourage you to savor it, to lean in and dig for more, rather than breeze past. I’m still compiling my thoughts on the book as a whole but I do know it was quite enjoyable.

What I’m reading now: The Obelisk Gate by N. K. Jemisin, book two in the Broken Earth Trilogy. A coworker lent me all three books in the series and I thoroughly enjoyed the first one. However, due to Karamazov slowing down my usual rate of reading, I’ve held on to the books and have not been reading them for several months now. Because of that, they’ve jumped to the front of my “read now” list so I can return them in a timely manner.

What I’m writing now: 65k words on my work-in-progress (woot) roughly 2/3rds of the way to a finished novel. Bit by bit, word by word, we’re getting there.
